Find and Supersede With Wildcards

To make clean up the list, I'll utilise the Find and Replace feature in Excel.

I'll practice the cleanup in three steps, using an asterisk (*) wildcard in the Find string.

  • The * wildcard represents any number of characters, including nil characters
  • Yous can employ the wildcard anywhere in the Observe string
  • You cannot use the wildcard in the Supervene upon string

i) Discover and Replace Colons and Text After

Starting time, I want to remove any colon, and all the characters subsequently the colon.

  • Select column A
  • To open up the Find and Replace window, press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + H
  • In the Notice What box, type a colon and an asterisk:       :*
  • Go out the Supersede With box empty, because you want to remove the characters, and not replace them with anything
  • Click Replace All

2) Find and Replace Hyphens, Spaces and Text

Next, I want to remove any to remove hyphens, and any text afterwards them. I want to remove the infinite before the hypen too, then include that in the Find box.

  • In the Find What box, type a space and hyphen, followed by an asterisk: [space]-*
  • Leave the Supervene upon With box empty
  • Click Supersede All

3) Find and Replace "of" and Text Before

Finally, I followed the aforementioned steps to remove the give-and-take "of", and any text before it.

Nosotros don't want to remove names that contain "of", and then be sure to include infinite characters before and afterward the "of"

  • In the Find What box, type an asterisk, followed by a infinite, "of" and another space :
    • * of
  • Go out the Replace With box empty
  • Click Replace All

List of Names to Clean Upwards

I've been given a list of names to clean up in Excel, and this is but a pocket-sized sample of a long listing. These are all fake names, just we'll run into how you can remove text, either before or after a specific character or string of characters.

In this cavalcade, we want to become rid of anything that's after a colon. So here'southward the name of a police house, a colon, so the name of an individual there.

Then we want to remove the colon and anything after that. And there's another example here.

There are also a few that have a hyphen. Once again, we want to remove the hyphen and anything after it. We also want to remove the space before the hyphen.

And the third thing we desire to practice is observe whatever that take the word of remove that give-and-take, the space after it, and annihilation before that.

Then we accept law office of, police offices of, and the police force role of. Nosotros also have someone with OF in their proper name, and we want to brand sure that doesn't get afflicted.

Make a Backup of Data

Before I make any changes, I'chiliad going to brand a copy of this information.

I don't want to work on the original. I want to keep that safe in case I have to go back to it. So either brand a re-create of the whole workbook or at least brand a re-create of the names you're going to work on.

So I'll select these two columns and re-create them. So we'll become to Sheet2, click here and paste.

So now I take a copy that I can piece of work on, without any concerns almost the original information.

Remove Colons and Text

The get-go matter I'm going to do is try and detect the colon and delete anything afterward that.

I'll select the column where I want the changes, and I'm going to utilize the Find and Replace window and the quickest way to go to that is Ctrl + H and here's the Observe and Replace window.

I'm going to be looking for a colon. Then I'll blazon that, then I want anything afterward that.

And the manner nosotros correspond anything is with a wild card, which is Shift + 8. So the asterisk represents whatever characters or no characters.

So if it concluded with a colon, it would also find that. So here, nosotros're going to notice colon John Wilson.

Information technology should too find colon Alice Smith. We want to supervene upon that with nothing. So I'chiliad going to leave this blank.

I will click Supercede All, and it should supersede the two items that I tin can see here.

It's telling me information technology fabricated two replacements, so that looks correct.

Remove Hyphens and Text

The next thing we're going to change is a hyphen and anything after that.

And so in this case, we want to include the space before the hyphen, and the hyphen and anything that follows.

Then I'g going to delete what's in the detect box. I'll type a infinite character, hyphen, and then the wildcard, again, Shift + eight.

I desire to replace that with nil.

And so I can run into two records here that accept hyphens. Click Replace All, and it made two replacements.

Remove OF and Text

The terminal thing I'm looking for is the word of, then I wanted to notice the word of which is on its own, not equally part of another word.

So I'll, again, clear out this Find What. This fourth dimension I want it to supplant whatever is before that.

I'll start with the wild carte, Shift + viii and infinite O F space.

Supplant that with cypher. So it should observe one, two, three, and ignore this one.

Click Supercede All fabricated three replacements and information technology left the proper name that has OF untouched.

So you tin apply, Notice and Replace with wildcards to either remove text before or afterwards a specific character or string of characters.
